how your electric and natural gas bills are calculated

 

Most utility bills have a fixed portion and a variable portion.

 

Fixed Charge

Variable Charge

The rate charged per kWh (electricity used)

You pay for what you use

The rate charged per kW (electric demand)

You pay for using a lot at one time

The rate charged per MCF (natural gas adjusted every 3 months)

The 6% state sales tax

Depends on amount of total electric or gas bill

The 3% school tax

Most commercial customers spend the following on gas and electricity charges:

Monthly base fees

From $25 to $100 per meter depending on utility

From $10 to $60 per meter depending on utility

Per unit energy rate

In December 2009, less than $10 per Mcf

(Changes every 3 months)

In December 2009, 8.5 cents per kWh

Demand charges

Range from $3 to $7 per kW. These can apply when your business uses maximum power loads
